If you’re a wee bit sceptical of flat-packed Irish pubs then let us allay your fears now. The Fifth Province is most certainly a themed Irish pub but there’s nothing cliched about it. For starters, it’s run by a couple of Irish fellas, which raises the level of authenticity no end.

The Fifth Province is The Ganley Group’s OG pub and it’s been going strong for 10 years but the owners could see it was capable of much more.

The venue’s success was based on pub basics done well, supplemented by a genuine commitment to live music, what’s more, local live music.

So when it came time to invest in the venue, Liam Ganley and Finn Brennan from the Ganley Group were determined to maintain the established essence of The Fifth Province while simultaneously taking it to another level. Interior designers, Studio Y, masterminded the refurb with MIC Projects doing the heavy lifting.

As you’d hope, audio didn’t play second fiddle to the aesthetics. The Ganley Group engaged Melbourne AV Integrator Aeon Technologies to design and commission an audio system that would transform the venue’s music offering.

BIGGER IS BETTER

The Fifth Province’s expansion required an audio system that could adapt to various settings— ranging from live music performances in the Public Bar and stage to the more intimate ambience of the Whiskey Bar and the outdoor Beer Garden and Veranda. Simplicity of operation was important, providing staff with a user-friendly interface to control audio levels and sources seamlessly during busy periods, avoiding the need for a specialist technician. The outdoor areas demanded weather-resistant equipment capable of withstanding Melbourne’s notoriously fickle climate without compromising sound quality. And finally, aesthetics was a special consideration. The equipment had to blend with the venue’s design, maintaining that authentic Irish pub atmosphere.

Fin Brennan, Operations Manager for Ganley Group Hospitality, explained, “There are a few different things that were really important to us when we were thinking about the installation. One of those things was ‘bigger is better’. The crowd has been coming to this pub for 10 years; they’ve been really loyal to it, and in turn we’ve been really loyal to live music and local acts. So, keeping that going but putting it on a bigger scale was a focus. We needed a sound system to match that.”

That ease-of-use was a crucial factor. “It needs to be really easy to use for the staff,” Fin continued. “In terms of the system they’ve put in place, we’re clicking buttons on screens—volume up and down, automatic volume set for certain areas. With televisions, we’re now controlling everything from one place when it comes to commentary, music, advertising—whatever you want to put on the TV is with a touch of a button. With that now in place too, it’s been really great.”

THE NEW KIT

Australian audiovisual distributor, Jands, supplied a comprehensive audio system featuring Electro-Voice loudspeakers and Blaze Audio amplifiers. “For the main stage, we used Electro-Voice ELX and EVC speakers,” explained Ilias Sintrikos, Business Development Manager at Jands. “For the outdoor areas that were weather-prone, we used the IP-rated EVID-S5.2X speakers. The bar required a background music solution, and there we utilised the EVID-S8.2T speakers. For amplification across the whole venue, we selected the Blaze PowerZone 3004 and 1004 amplifiers.”

NEXT 10 YEARS

The system delivers a rich and full sound across the various spaces, ensuring every guest enjoys exceptional sound quality. The design process took into account the venue’s reimagined layout and updated architecture. The integration of Electro-Voice loudspeakers and Blaze Audio amplifiers has delivered a versatile, high-quality audio solution that meets the diverse needs of the venue.

The final thoughts from Fin Brennan: “Ten years later, here we are, and four months ago, The Fifth Province reopened with a huge extension — a whiskey bar, massive beer garden, and the veranda area. The public bar, which was a part of the original, older Fifth Province, became an even bigger venue in terms of what we have to offer with live music, major bands, DJs, a much improved, high-performance sound system.”
