Sydney’s Kings Cross district continues to vie for the mantle of the capital’s most design-conscious destination, with the opening of the sleek and sexy Diamant Hotel. The 77-room boutique hotel is part of the Eight Hotels group, which plans to open an 80-room Diamant in not-quite-so-trendy Canberra. Easily located — it’s just to the right of the red neon Coca-Cola sign — the Diamant has a decidedly upmarket buzz about it. The interior, designed by Edge Interiors, features an elegant monochromatic colour scheme that is sexy, ambient, sleek and plush yet rather masculine.

The corridors are deep and moody with gloss black room numbers and polished stainless steel LED light fittings. The rooms house 42-inch plasma screens, DVD players and iPod stations while the suites feature living spaces, private sleeping areas and limestone bathrooms. A combination of black high-gloss veneer, Italian black leather and polished stainless steel contrasts with high gloss white polyeurethane, pewter upholstery and crisp white linen. Ambient lighting abounds with statement black silk string light fittings drawing the attention.
