Souk in the City is the latest venture by Omar Majdi, with interiors by Baxter Creative. It blends the allure of Morocco with the clean design that is demanded of Sydney’s design savvy diners. A unique opportunity for design director Charles Prior of Baxter Creative, this project took Charles to the heart of Marrakech (presumably with a big suitcase) for an extraordinary experience sourcing, buying and commissioning work from some of the very best artisans. Charles commissioned all of the feature lighting throughout the restaurant, developing designs based on examples seen in some of the oldest buildings in Marrakech.In Casablanca he stumbled across some amazing fabrics milled in nearby factories for some of Morocco’s wealthiest residents and this inspired the array of unique scatter cushions that form one of the defining features of the space.The other main feature is the screens, developed from a traditional design but laser cut here by Overexposure in Sydney. These filter light and help give a soft ambient atmosphere that gives the restaurant its sensual luxuriousness.
