Teage Ezard’s Gingerboy Upstairs has been refurbished to tie in with the downstairs dining area. Still keeping with Ezard’s penchant for hawker street-style eating with more structured dining options, Gingerboy Upstairs adds another dimension. “We have designed the upstairs space as a grouping of separate areas for pre-dinner drinks, bar dining and lounging,” said Ezard. “It’s a bit like an Emperor’s box.” [The Emperor’s what?! — Ed.]
Architects Herman+Mason collaborated with Ezard on the crowning level, infusing materials in a manner similar to Ezard’s exploration of the hot, sour, sweet and salty. Intricate joinery detail, lush fabrics and a perforated red ceiling wrap Gingerboy Upstairs, with an entire wall covered in red aluminium panels assembled to take on the look of a lantern. The new room is accessible from a separate entrance that leads to the bar and lounge area and can accommodate up to 80 people for a cocktail function. “The upstairs look is very much ‘New York meets Shanghai’. It was created specifically as an evening venue, so the space is welcoming and sensuous, with the requisite ‘bling’ factor,” said Ezard.
