As an early 100th birthday present, Icebergs has been given a refurbishment from Sydney-based 2RKS Architecture + Design. “Part of the design brief was to create an atmosphere of warmth, invitation and comfort, and competing with the best of any Eastern Suburbs venues without the pretense,” says 2RKS director Richard Salmon.

Having grown up near a beach community in Long Island, NY, Richard used his personal understanding of beach culture to design for people with an ever-increasing desire for appealing venues with good food and atmosphere, to enjoy with friends and family.

“We envisage a market ability for the club to advantage themselves as being a premier daytime and night time spot in Bondi,” says Icebergs Secretary Manager Kerrie Brien. “With the design by Richard and his team at 2RKS we really have achieved this.”

The updated Bondi Icebergs has the look and feel to match its renowned location – ocean breeze and bright blue views. Italian tiles machine-cut to strips give the impression of the timber slats of a boardwalk, pier or esplanade. The carpet is a custom-designed axminster that embraces the dappled colour of the sea.

The finish on the dining furniture is a pearlescent white, reminiscent of shells. The imported custom cane dining chairs and stools are the first of their kind in Australia.

“Our design for the Bondi Icebergs club takes the club to the next stage in its development,” says Richard, who describes the design approach as “adding onto, rather than subtracting from”.
